Ormiston Gorge and Pound is one of the West MacDonnell Ranges’ most spectacular waterholes and walking destinations. The towering red quartzite cliffs frame a permanent waterhole that reflects the sky, while the vast natural amphitheatre of the Pound—a circular valley—offers an unforgettable outback hiking experience. This is a place where the ancient landscape feels almost sacred, and the silence is broken only by bird calls and the rustle of spinifex.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Gorge Waterhole: A stunning, year-round swimming hole surrounded by red cliffs and ghost gums—perfect for a refreshing dip after a walk.
- Pound Walk (7.5 km circuit): A moderately challenging loop that climbs over a saddle into the vast, enclosed Pound, offering panoramic views of the amphitheatre and the chance to spot black-footed rock wallabies.
- Ghost Gum Lookout: A short, steep side track from the Pound Walk rewards with iconic views of a lone ghost gum clinging to the cliff edge.
- Wildlife watching: Keep an eye out for dingoes, perentie lizards, and a variety of birds including the majestic wedge-tailed eagle.
- Cultural significance: The gorge is part of the Western Arrernte people’s country; interpretive signs share stories of the landscape and traditional bush tucker.

If you’re short on time, the 2.5 km Ghost Gum Walk to the lookout is a rewarding shorter option. Many visitors combine it with a morning at Glen Helen Gorge and an afternoon at Ellery Creek Big Hole.
