Glen Helen Gorge is one of the most dramatic and photogenic spots in the West MacDonnell Ranges, where the Finke River cuts through ancient quartzite cliffs. The vibrant red rock walls, cool waterholes, and abundant birdlife make it a must-visit for anyone exploring the Red Centre. It’s a place that feels both rugged and serene, perfect for a refreshing dip or a short hike with breathtaking views.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, which is enough to do the short lookout walk, take a swim, and enjoy the scenery. If you’re planning a longer day, combine Glen Helen with other West MacDonnell highlights like Ormiston Gorge and Ellery Creek Big Hole. The site is a great stop on a self-drive itinerary from Alice Springs, about 130 km west along Larapinta Drive.
