Standley Chasm is a dramatic sandstone cleft in the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 50 kilometres west of Alice Springs. The sheer walls of the chasm glow a deep ochre-red when the sun is directly overhead, making it a photographer's dream. This sacred site to the Arrernte people offers a short but unforgettable walk into a cool, narrow canyon that feels worlds away from the arid desert surrounding it.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Standley Chasm, including the short walk and time to absorb the atmosphere. To catch the best light, aim to arrive around midday. If you're combining it with other West MacDonnell Range sights, half a day is sufficient to explore the chasm and a couple of nearby gorges.
