Barrow Creek is a tiny, gritty outpost on the Stuart Highway, halfway between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. This is the real outback: a pub, a roadhouse, and a handful of houses baking under an endless sky. It’s a place to stretch your legs, hear a tall tale or two, and feel the vastness of the Red Centre.

• Barrow Creek Pub – This iconic outback pub is the heart of the settlement. Grab a cold beer, chat with locals, and check out the walls plastered with banknotes and memorabilia. The pub also has a small museum of local history.
• Barrow Creek Telegraph Station – Just north of town, the stone ruins of the 1872 telegraph station mark the site of a famous attack by Kaytetye people in 1874, when two linesmen were killed. A poignant and important historical site.
• Skull Hole – A short walk from the telegraph station, this waterhole in the granite outcrops is where the attackers’ remains were placed. It’s a sacred and somber place; treat it with respect.
• Wycliffe Well – 20 km north, this roadhouse is Australia’s self-proclaimed UFO capital, with alien-themed decor and a quirky vibe. Worth a quick stop for a laugh and a photo.
• Outback landscapes – The drive itself is the attraction: red dirt, spinifex, ghost gums, and vast horizons. Pull over safely to soak it in.

Barrow Creek is a 30-minute stop – enough for a drink at the pub and a look at the telegraph station. If you’re fascinated by outback history, allow an hour. Most travellers pass through on the way between Alice Springs (3 hours south) and Tennant Creek (2 hours north). It’s a perfect lunch or toilet break.
