Wauchope is a tiny outback settlement on the Stuart Highway, 120 km south of Tennant Creek, that serves as a dusty portal to the vast, mesmerising landscapes of the Red Centre. With a population hovering around 50, this former gold-mining and railway town feels like stepping into a classic Australian outback movie set. Its enduring draw is the eerie, rusted skeleton of the Wycliffe Well alien-themed roadhouse nearby, but Wauchope itself offers an authentic, no-frills taste of remote NT life, with a pub that doubles as the social heart of the community.
Highlights & What to See
- Wauchope Hotel (The Pub): The legendary outback pub is a must-stop for a cold beer and a yarn with locals. Its walls are plastered with memorabilia, and the beer garden provides a welcome respite from the heat.
- Wycliffe Well: Just 10 km south, this eccentric roadhouse is Australia's self-proclaimed UFO capital, festooned with alien statues and murals. Even if you're not into extraterrestrials, it's a kitsch photo op and a good spot for supplies.
- Old Telegraph Station Ruins: A short walk from the pub reveals the stone remains of the original Overland Telegraph Line repeater station, a poignant reminder of 19th-century communications.
- Stargazing: With virtually zero light pollution, Wauchope offers some of the darkest skies in Australia. On a clear night, the Milky Way arches overhead like a celestial highway.
- Desert Wildlife: Keep an eye out for red kangaroos, dingoes, and wedge-tailed eagles along the highway. At dusk, the landscape comes alive with bird calls.
Suggested Time to Spend
Wauchope is a quick pit stop rather than a destination. Most travellers spend 30 minutes to an hour stretching legs at the pub and snapping photos at Wycliffe Well. If you're keen on a night of exceptional stargazing or want to soak up the outback atmosphere, an overnight stay at the hotel's basic but comfortable rooms is rewarding. It works best as a lunch or early-afternoon break between Tennant Creek and Alice Springs (about 3.5 hours south).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Tennant Creek: 120 km north, this gold-mining town offers the Battery Hill Mining Centre and the Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre.
- Alice Springs: 380 km south, the heart of the Red Centre with the West MacDonnell Ranges, Alice Springs Desert Park, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
- Davenport Ranges National Park: 150 km north-east of Tennant Creek, this remote park features rugged gorges, waterholes, and 4WD tracks for adventurous travellers.
- Karlu Karlu (Devils Marbles) Walk: The short walking trails around the marbles are easily combined with a stop at Wauchope.
