Halfway between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek, Wycliffe Well is a tiny roadhouse that has earned the unofficial title of Australia's UFO capital. The outback sky here is famously dark and vast, and locals claim more unexplained lights and sightings than anywhere else in the country. It's a quirky, memorable stop on the Stuart Highway – part kitsch alien museum, part practical fuel-and-coffee break, and a perfect spot to stretch your legs under a big sky.
Highlights & What to See
- UFO-themed roadhouse: The main attraction is the roadhouse itself, plastered with murals of aliens, flying saucers, and conspiracy theories. Inside, a small museum displays newspaper clippings, photographs, and witness accounts of UFO sightings from the 1940s to today.
- Stargazing at night: With zero light pollution, the night sky is breathtaking. Bring a blanket, lie back, and scan for shooting stars – or something more unusual. The roadhouse often has a telescope set up for visitors.
- Outback sunset: The red desert landscape glows gold and crimson as the sun goes down. It's a classic Central Australian moment, made slightly surreal by the alien-themed surrounds.
- Roadhouse amenities: A decent café serves burgers, pies, and cold drinks. There's also a small campground and basic accommodation if you want to stay the night.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers stop for 20–30 minutes to refuel, grab a snack, and snap photos of the alien kitsch. If you're a keen stargazer or UFO enthusiast, consider staying overnight – the campground is basic but quiet, and the night sky is the real draw. Plan your stop around sunset or late evening for the best experience.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve – 130 km north, these giant granite boulders are a sacred site and a stunning photo stop, especially at sunrise or sunset.
- Tennant Creek – 170 km north, a historic gold-mining town with the Battery Hill Mining Centre and the Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre.
- Alice Springs – 200 km south, the hub of the Red Centre, with the Alice Springs Desert Park, the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum, and the Todd River.
- Karlu Karlu / Devils Marbles – same as above, listed again for emphasis; it's the most logical next stop heading north.
- Wauchope – a tiny roadhouse 20 km south, with a historic pub and another good fuel stop.
