Namatjira Drive is a spectacular 140 km scenic loop west of Alice Springs that winds through the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering some of the Red Centre's most dramatic and accessible outback scenery. Named after the celebrated Indigenous artist Albert Namatjira, the sealed road takes you past ochre-red gorges, permanent waterholes, and ancient mountain ranges that shift colour with the changing light. This is essential driving for anyone wanting to experience the rugged beauty of Central Australia without a 4WD.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpsons Gap – A striking gap in the range with a permanent waterhole; arrive early or late for the best light and a chance to see black-footed rock-wallabies.
- Standley Chasm – A narrow cleft in the rock that blazes with fiery colour when the midday sun hits the walls; a short walk leads to the chasm floor.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – A deep, cool waterhole perfect for a refreshing swim surrounded by red cliffs and ghost gums.
- Serpentine Gorge – A quieter gorge with a short trail to a lookout over the waterhole; keep an eye out for peregrine falcons.
- Ochre Pits – Ancient ochre deposits used by Arrernte people for ceremonial painting; the layered colours of white, yellow, and red are a vivid cultural sight.
- Glen Helen Gorge – The western end of the drive, where the Finke River cuts through the range; the nearby Glen Helen Resort offers accommodation and a cold beer.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day to drive the entire loop from Alice Springs, stopping at each major gorge and waterhole. Start early (around 7 am) to catch the soft morning light and avoid the midday heat. If you only have half a day, focus on the eastern section from Simpsons Gap to Ellery Creek Big Hole. For a more relaxed pace, camp overnight at one of the designated campgrounds along the drive, such as at Ellery Creek or Glen Helen.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs – The gateway town, with cultural attractions like the Araluen Cultural Precinct and the Alice Springs Desert Park.
- Larapinta Trail – One of Australia's great multi-day hikes; walk a short section from Simpsons Gap or Telegraph Station for a taste of the trail.
- Finke Gorge National Park – Home to Palm Valley, a lush oasis of rare red cabbage palms; accessible via 4WD from Hermannsburg.
- Kings Canyon – A dramatic sandstone canyon in Watarrka National Park, about 3 hours' drive west; combine with Namatjira Drive for a longer Red Centre itinerary.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – The iconic monolith and domes, a 4–5 hour drive southwest; many travellers link the West MacDonnells with Uluru on a self-drive loop.
