Glen Helen Gorge, a stunning chasm carved through the MacDonnell Ranges, is one of the Northern Territory's most dramatic natural landmarks. About 130 kilometres west of Alice Springs, this gorge offers a quintessential outback experience with its towering red cliffs, permanent waterhole, and serene atmosphere. It’s a favourite stop on the Larapinta Trail and a must-see for anyone exploring the West MacDonnell National Park.
Highlights & What to See
- The Gorge Walk: Follow the short, easy trail from the carpark to the waterhole. The sheer walls rise up to 100 metres, creating a majestic amphitheatre of ochre and rust.
- Waterhole Reflections: The still, dark water mirrors the cliffs and sky. It’s a perfect spot for photography, especially in the early morning or late afternoon light.
- Birdwatching & Wildlife: Keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies scrambling among the boulders, and listen for the calls of zebra finches, honeyeaters and peregrine falcons.
- Sunset Views: As the sun drops, the gorge walls glow fiery red. The viewing platform near the carpark offers an unobstructed panorama of the surrounding ranges.
- Larapinta Trail Access: Glen Helen Gorge is a major trailhead for the Larapinta Trail, with a section leading west towards Serpentine Gorge and beyond.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one to two hours here, which is enough to walk to the waterhole, soak in the scenery, and perhaps spot wildlife. If you’re hiking the Larapinta Trail, you might overnight at the nearby Glen Helen Resort (with a campground and basic accommodation). To fully appreciate the changing light, consider visiting both late afternoon and the following morning.
