Finke Gorge National Park
Deep in the Red Centre, Finke Gorge National Park is a dramatic landscape of ancient palm trees, red sandstone cliffs, and the iconic Finke River—believed to be one of the world's oldest river systems. This remote park offers a true outback experience, with rugged 4WD tracks and walks that reveal a surprising oasis in the desert. It's a place where the Western Arrernte people's deep connection to the land is palpable, and the sight of the rare Livistona mariae palms (found only here) against the rust-red gorge is unforgettable.
Highlights & What to See
- Palm Valley: A lush, palm-filled gorge that feels like a mirage; walk the 5km Kalaranga Lookout trail for sweeping views or the 2km Mpaara Loop to see ancient cycads and the palms up close.
- Finke River 4WD Track: A challenging but rewarding drive through sandy riverbeds and rocky gorges—high-clearance 4WD essential. The route from Hermannsburg to Palm Valley is an adventure in itself.
- Boggy Hole: A permanent waterhole perfect for a refreshing dip after a dusty drive; keep an eye out for birdlife like zebra finches and budgerigars.
- Hermannsburg Historic Precinct: Just outside the park, this former Lutheran mission (established 1877) offers a glimpse into the area's pioneering and Aboriginal history, with restored buildings and art galleries.
- Western Arrernte Culture: The park is part of the traditional lands of the Western Arrernte people; look for interpretive signs and consider a guided tour from Hermannsburg to learn about bush tucker and Dreamtime stories.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors tackle Finke Gorge as a full-day trip from Alice Springs (about 130km southwest). If you're 4WD-equipped, leave early to allow time for the drive (allow 2–3 hours each way) and at least 3–4 hours to explore Palm Valley. For a more immersive experience, camp overnight at the basic Finke Gorge campground (no facilities) to catch the sunrise over the gorge and explore further walks. Two days is ideal if you also want to visit Hermannsburg and do the full Finke River 4WD track.

- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park): A spectacular sandstone canyon with the famous Rim Walk, about 3 hours east of Finke Gorge via the Mereenie Loop (4WD required).
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: While further afield (about 4–5 hours southwest), combining Finke Gorge with a Red Centre road trip that includes Uluru and Kata Tjuta is a classic journey.
