Kings Canyon is a dramatic chasm carved into the red sandstone of Watarrka National Park, about 300 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs. The sheer 100-metre walls and the cool, palm-lined gorge floor create a landscape that feels both ancient and otherworldly. It's a highlight of the Red Centre and an essential stop on any outback self-drive itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Rim Walk: A 6-kilometre loop that takes you along the canyon edge, offering jaw-dropping views across the chasm and the surrounding desert. Early morning is best for soft light and cooler temperatures.
- Garden of Eden: A permanent waterhole nestled in the canyon, surrounded by lush cycads and ferns – a surprising oasis in the arid landscape. It's a great spot for a rest and photo op.
- Kings Creek Walk: A shorter, easier walk along the canyon floor that leads to a lookout. Ideal if you have limited time or want a less strenuous option.
- Sunset Viewing: The canyon walls glow fiery orange and red as the sun sets. Head to the designated sunset viewing area near the resort for spectacular colours.
- Helicopter Scenic Flights: For a bird's-eye perspective, a helicopter flight offers sweeping views of the canyon and the surrounding George Gill Range.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day at Kings Canyon. The Rim Walk takes 3–4 hours, and you'll want extra time for the shorter trails, sunset, and a meal at the resort. If you're on a tight schedule, a half-day (morning or late afternoon) can still be rewarding, but you'll miss the full experience. Overnight stays are popular to catch both sunset and sunrise.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: About 300 kilometres southwest, the iconic monolith and the domes of Kata Tjuta are a must-see. Many travellers do a loop from Alice Springs to Kings Canyon then to Uluru.
- Watarrka National Park: The canyon is the centrepiece, but the park also has other walks and wildlife. Explore the lesser-known Giles Track for a multi-day hike.
- Alice Springs: The gateway to the Red Centre, about 3.5 hours drive northeast. Stock up on supplies and explore the town's cultural sites before heading to the canyon.
- West MacDonnell Ranges: Stunning ranges with gorges and waterholes like Ormiston Gorge and Glen Helen Gorge, located between Alice Springs and Kings Canyon. Perfect for a scenic detour.
- Finke Gorge National Park: Home to the ancient Palm Valley, this park offers 4WD adventures and unique cycad palms. About 200 kilometres southeast of Kings Canyon.
