Deep in the red heart of Australia, Wellington Caves offers a cool, otherworldly escape from the outback sun. These ancient limestone caverns, formed over 400 million years, are a highlight of the Lasseter Highway region, combining natural wonder, palaeontological significance, and a dash of underground adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Cathedral Cave: The showpiece cavern, with towering stalactites and stalagmites that create a natural amphitheatre. Guided tours reveal its history and eerie acoustics.
- Gaden Cave: A more intimate, fossil-rich cave where you can see the remains of prehistoric megafauna, including diprotodons and giant kangaroos.
- Phosphate Mine: Explore the historic mine tunnels that once yielded guano for fertiliser – a fascinating glimpse into early 20th-century industry.
- Self-guided limestone walk: Above ground, a short trail leads you through the karst landscape, with interpretive signs explaining the geology and local flora.
Suggested Time to Spend
Set aside about two to three hours to tour the main caves and wander the surface trails. The guided tours run regularly and last around 45 minutes each; if you want to see both Cathedral and Gaden caves, plan for a half-day visit. It’s a perfect midday break on a Lasseter Highway road trip – cool underground, then a picnic in the shade of the visitor centre.
