Watarrka National Park, home to the iconic Kings Canyon, is a dramatic chasm of rust-red cliffs and lush palm-filled gorges in the heart of the Northern Territory. This ancient landscape, sacred to the Luritja people, offers a striking contrast to the surrounding desert—a must-stop on any Red Centre road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk – A 6km loop that climbs to the canyon edge, revealing breathtaking views of the 100m-high sandstone walls, the 'Lost City' domes, and the permanent waterhole known as the Garden of Eden.
- Kings Creek Walk – A shorter, easier trail that winds along the creek bed to a lookout at the canyon mouth, perfect for early morning or late afternoon light.
- Kings Canyon itself – simply stand at the edge and absorb the scale and silence of this 270-million-year-old formation.
- Kathleen Springs Walk – A gentle 2.6km return walk to a spring-fed waterhole, offering insights into local Aboriginal culture and a chance to spot rock wallabies.
- Stargazing – The park is a Dark Sky site; on clear nights the Milky Way arcs vividly overhead.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring Kings Canyon. Arrive early (by 7–8am) to beat the heat and crowds on the Rim Walk. If you're keen to hike and soak in the scenery, plan for 4–5 hours. Add an extra hour for the Kathleen Springs walk or a sunset drink at the nearby Kings Canyon Resort. Many travellers include Watarrka as a two-day stop between Uluru and Alice Springs.
