Stretching 61 kilometres across the untamed western end of Kangaroo Island, the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail is Australia’s premier multi-day coastal hike. This five-day, hut-to-hut walk threads through Flinders Chase National Park, past dramatic sea cliffs, secluded beaches, and ancient mallee forests. It’s a chance to spot koalas, kangaroos, and sea lions in their natural habitat, all while sleeping in comfortable eco-huts under star-dusted skies. The trail is best tackled between October and April, when the weather is mild and wildflowers carpet the landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Remarkable Rocks – These precariously balanced granite boulders, sculpted by wind and sea, glow gold at sunset and offer a surreal photo backdrop.
- Admirals Arch – A natural rock archway where New Zealand fur seals frolic in the surf; the boardwalk gives you a front-row seat to their antics.
- Flinders Chase National Park – The heart of the trail, with towering cliffs, coastal heath, and a resident population of kangaroos and Tammar wallabies.
- Hanson Bay Sanctuary – A wildlife refuge on the trail where you can hand-feed kangaroos and spot echidnas and koalas.
- Snellings Beach – A pristine white-sand beach perfect for a midday swim or a picnic with views of the Southern Ocean.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers allow five days and four nights to complete the full trail, averaging 12–15 kilometres per day. This gives you time to linger at viewpoints, enjoy a swim, and take side trips to nearby attractions. If you’re short on time, you can tackle the first two days as a standalone section from Flinders Chase Visitor Centre to Hanson Bay, still soaking up the best of the coastal scenery. The trail is graded moderate to hard, with some steep sections, so good fitness is recommended.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Seal Bay Conservation Park – Just a short drive from the trailhead, you can walk among a colony of Australian sea lions on a guided beach tour.
- Little Sahara – A surprising sand dune system inland, perfect for sandboarding or a sunset hike.
- Vivonne Bay – Often voted Australia’s best beach, with calm turquoise waters and a jetty ideal for fishing.
- Kelly Hill Caves – Explore limestone caves with guided tours that reveal fossilised kangaroo bones and ancient stalactites.
- Penneshaw – The ferry terminal town, with a penguin centre where you can watch little penguins return to their burrows at dusk.
