Little Sahara
Little Sahara is a surreal pocket of rolling white sand dunes that seems utterly out of place in the arid Red Centre. Located about 30 km southwest of Yulara (Ayers Rock Resort), this hidden gem offers a striking contrast to the region's iconic red earth and spinifex. The dunes, formed from ancient lake sediments, stretch for several kilometres and provide a unique landscape for sandboarding, photography, and quiet contemplation. Accessible via a short unsealed road, it's a lesser-known spot that rewards adventurous travellers with solitude and a sense of discovery.
Highlights & What to See
- Sandboarding the Dunes – The main draw: hire a sandboard in Yulara and carve down the steep, soft slopes. It’s like snowboarding in the desert, with a thrilling, silent rush.
- Stunning Contrasts – The brilliant white sand against the deep blue sky and distant red ranges makes for incredible photo ops, especially at sunrise or sunset.
- Wildlife Spotting – Keep an eye out for dingoes, red kangaroos, and a variety of birds that frequent the dune edges during cooler hours.
- 360-Degree Views – Climb the highest dune for a panoramic view of the surrounding desert, with Uluru and Kata Tjuta faintly visible on the horizon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal – allocate 2–3 hours for sandboarding and exploring the dunes. Arrive early morning (before 9am) or late afternoon (after 4pm) to avoid the midday heat and catch the best light. If you're keen on photography, plan for sunrise or sunset when the dunes glow golden. Combine with a morning visit to nearby attractions to make a full day of discovery.
