Penneshaw, a sleepy hamlet on the Lasseter Highway, is the closest settlement to the soaring red domes of Kings Canyon and the vast emptiness of the western Simpson Desert. It’s a classic outback pit stop – a pub, a roadhouse, and a handful of homes – but its real value is as a springboard for the iconic Watarrka National Park. The silence here is profound, broken only by the wind and the crunch of your boots on red dirt.
Highlights & What to See
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk: The undeniable highlight – a 6km loop that climbs the sheer sandstone walls and takes you across the ‘Lost City’ domes and down into the lush, palm-filled Garden of Eden. Start early to avoid the heat and the crowds.
- Kings Creek Station: A working cattle and camel station offering quad-bike tours, helicopter flights over the canyon, and a chance to pat a camel. It’s a quintessential outback experience.
- Kathleen Springs Walk: A short, accessible 2.6km walk to a tranquil waterhole – a cool, shaded contrast to the canyon rim. Great for a gentle afternoon stroll.
- Sunset at the Canyon: Watch the sandstone walls blaze orange and crimson from the sunset viewing platform near the Kings Canyon Resort. It’s a photographer’s dream.
- Stargazing: With minimal light pollution, the night sky here is a riot of stars. The resort sometimes hosts astronomy talks, or you can just lie on a swag and gaze up.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers use Penneshaw as a base for a full day in Watarrka National Park. Arrive the afternoon before, do the Kings Canyon Rim Walk early the next morning (allow 3–4 hours), then add a shorter walk like Kathleen Springs in the late afternoon. One night is enough for the highlights; two nights let you do the rim walk and a helicopter flight, plus a sunset and sunrise. If you’re pressed for time, you can drive in from Alice Springs (4.5 hours) and back in a long day, but it’s a rushed, exhausting day.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: A 5-hour drive south-west. Combine Penneshaw with the red centre’s crown jewels for an epic loop: Alice Springs → Kings Canyon → Uluru → back via the Stuart Highway.
- Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon): Obviously – the reason you’re here. The park is right next door, and the walks are world-class.
- Finke Gorge National Park: About 2.5 hours east, near Alice Springs. Home to the ancient Palm Valley, a lush oasis of red cabbage palms that predate the dinosaurs.
- Palm Valley: Within Finke Gorge, this 4WD-accessible valley is a stunning contrast to the desert – think ferns, cycads, and a permanent waterhole.
