Thundering into a plunge pool fringed by monsoon vine forest, Jim Falls is a hidden gem in the heart of the Red Centre. This seasonal waterfall on the Lasseter Highway rewards travellers who venture off the main road with a cool, shady oasis and a powerful cascade—when it's flowing. The contrast of red rock walls, green vegetation and the roar of water is pure outback magic.
Highlights & What to See
- Jim Falls itself – A dramatic waterfall that plunges over a sandstone cliff into a deep pool, best visited after summer rains when the flow is strongest.
- Plunge pool swimming – Take a refreshing dip in the clear, cool water surrounded by rock walls; a welcome escape from the desert heat.
- Monsoon vine forest – A lush pocket of vegetation that feels worlds away from the spinifex plains, with paperbarks, cycads and birdlife.
- Scenic gorge walk – A short track leads to the base of the falls and continues a little way into the gorge, offering great views of the rugged landscape.
- Sunset colours – Late afternoon light paints the cliffs in shades of ochre and gold, making for stunning photos.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Jim Falls, which is enough time for the walk, a swim and some quiet appreciation. It works well as a picnic stop or a short detour on a drive along the Lasseter Highway. If you're keen on photography or just want to soak up the atmosphere, allow half a day and combine it with nearby gorges.
