Ormiston Gorge

Ormiston Gorge is a stunning waterhole and gorge in the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering some of the best swimming, walking, and wildlife spotting in the Red Centre. The towering quartzite cliffs and permanent waterhole create a dramatic oasis that feels worlds away from the desert plains.

• Swim in the permanent waterhole – The clear, cool waters of Ormiston Gorge are irresistible on a hot day. The sandy beach and shaded spots make it a perfect place to relax.
• Ormiston Gorge Walk (Ghost Gum Walk) – An easy 2 km loop that takes you to the waterhole and through the gorge, with excellent views of the red cliffs and ghost gums.
• Pound Walk – A more challenging 7.5 km circuit that climbs over the ridge for panoramic views of the gorge and the surrounding ranges. Allow 3–4 hours.
• Wildlife spotting – Keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies, especially in the early morning or late afternoon, as well as a variety of birds around the waterhole.
• Ormiston Gorge Lookout – A short, steep climb from the car park rewards you with a sweeping view of the gorge and the West MacDonnell Ranges.

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 2–3 hours here, which is enough for a swim and the short Ghost Gum Walk. If you plan to tackle the Pound Walk, allocate at least half a day. The gorge is at its best in the morning or late afternoon when the light paints the cliffs in deep reds and oranges, and the temperatures are cooler for walking.
