Simpsons Gap
Simpsons Gap is one of the West MacDonnell Ranges' most accessible and photogenic chasms, a dramatic cleft in rust-red quartzite that frames a permanent waterhole and a ghost gum-studded creek bed. Just 18 km west of Alice Springs, this gap offers a quintessential Red Centre experience: towering cliffs, desert river red gums, and the chance to spot black-footed rock-wallabies at dawn or dusk. The short, easy walk to the gap is perfect for a quick stop, but the area rewards those who linger with its serene beauty and Aboriginal Dreamtime stories.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpsons Gap Walk – An easy 1 km return stroll along a sealed path through river red gums to the gap itself, where a permanent waterhole reflects the sheer cliffs. Best in the soft light of morning or late afternoon.
- Ghost Gum Lookout – A short side track leads to a viewpoint offering a classic outback panorama of the gap and the iconic ghost gums clinging to the rock face.
- Black-footed Rock-wallabies – Early morning or late afternoon, scan the cliffs for these shy marsupials. They are most active near the waterhole.
