Ormiston Gorge and Pound is a stunning natural amphitheatre in the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering some of the most dramatic landscapes in Australia’s Red Centre. The sheer quartzite cliffs rise up to 300 metres, encircling a flat, sandy pound that is often dry but transforms after rain. This is a place for walkers, swimmers, and photographers seeking solitude and raw outback beauty, far from the crowds of Uluru.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Gorge Walk: A 7.8 km loop that takes you through the gorge, up to the rim for panoramic views, and down into the pound. Allow 3–4 hours for this moderate-to-hard walk.
- Pound Walk: A shorter, easier 2.5 km circuit around the floor of the pound, perfect for a quick exploration or for families.
- Ghost Gum Lookout: A short side track offering iconic views of a solitary ghost gum clinging to the cliff face – a classic outback photo.
- Swimming: The permanent waterhole at the gorge entrance is a refreshing spot for a dip, especially in summer. The clear, cool water is a welcome relief.
- Wildlife: Keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies, birdlife such as zebra finches and honeyeaters, and reptiles like the central bearded dragon.
- Ormiston Gorge Campground: A basic but well-maintained campground with facilities, ideal for an overnight stay under the stars.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day (3–5 hours) here, which is enough to complete the main gorge walk and enjoy a swim. If you want to do the full loop and soak in the atmosphere, consider arriving early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Overnight campers can enjoy sunset and sunrise walks when the colours on the cliffs are at their most vivid.
