Stretching 160 km west of Alice Springs, the West Macdonnell Ranges are a dramatic spine of ancient quartzite ridges, ochre gorges, and permanent waterholes that form the heart of Arrernte country. This is a landscape that demands slow exploration — the changing light paints the cliffs in deep reds and purples, and the silence is broken only by birdsong and the rustle of spinifex. For self-drivers, the sealed Larapinta Drive and unsealed Namatjira Road offer a classic outback loop that can be tailored to a day trip or a week-long adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpsons Gap – A dramatic cleft in the range with a permanent waterhole; spot black-footed rock-wallabies at dawn or dusk.
- Standley Chasm (Angkerle Atwatye) – Sheer walls rise 80 m, and at midday the sun fires the rock into a brilliant orange. Arrive early to avoid crowds.
- Ochre Pits – A cultural site where Arrernte people have sourced ochre for millennia; the layered colours of white, yellow, and red are a photographer’s dream.
- Ormiston Gorge & Pound – The region’s most spectacular waterhole, with a 7.5 km loop walk around the pound that offers sweeping views of the range.
- Glen Helen Gorge – A permanent waterhole at the base of towering cliffs; it’s also the western terminus of the Larapinta Trail and a great spot for a swim.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – A deep, cool waterhole flanked by red dolomite cliffs; perfect for a midday dip and a picnic.
- Larapinta Trail – One of Australia’s great long-distance walks; even a short section from any of the gorges gives a taste of the desert’s raw beauty.
Suggested Time to Spend
To do the West Macdonnells justice, allow at least two full days. A common approach is to drive the loop from Alice Springs: take Larapinta Drive west to Glen Helen, then return via Namatjira Road, stopping at every gorge. If you have three or four days, add a night at Ormiston Gorge campground and tackle the full Ormiston Pound walk or a multi-day section of the Larapinta Trail. Those short on time can hit the highlights (Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, and Ellery Creek) in a long day trip from Alice, but you’ll miss the quiet magic of the deeper gorges at sunset.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs – The gateway town, with the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum, the School of the Air, and the Araluen Cultural Precinct.
- Alice Springs Desert Park – A world-class wildlife park that showcases desert ecosystems and nocturnal animals.
- East Macdonnell Ranges – Less visited but equally dramatic, with Trephina Gorge, N’Dhala Gorge, and Emily Gap.
- Finke Gorge National Park – Home to the ancient Palm Valley, where a four-wheel-drive track leads to a lush oasis of red cabbage palms.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) – A 3.5-hour drive southwest, offering the legendary Rim Walk and the Garden of Eden waterhole.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – Further southwest but easily combined into a longer outback itinerary; allow at least two days for Uluru and Kata Tjuta.
