Glen Helen Gorge is a spectacular natural amphitheatre carved through the West MacDonnell Ranges, where the Finke River cuts a deep chasm through ancient quartzite cliffs. The gorge’s ochre-red walls, permanent waterholes, and abundant birdlife make it a serene stop along the Red Centre Way. Unlike the busier Ormiston Gorge, Glen Helen feels wild and untamed, with a palpable sense of timelessness.
Highlights & What to See
- The Gorge Walk: A short, easy trail leads to the main waterhole, where you can spot black-footed rock wallabies and listen to the calls of zebra finches. The still water mirrors the towering cliffs, creating a photographer’s dream at golden hour.
- Swimming in the Waterhole: During the warmer months (and when water levels are safe), the permanent waterhole offers a refreshing dip. It’s one of the few reliable swimming spots in the region.
- Glen Helen Homestead: This historic outback pub and accommodation serves cold beer and hearty meals. The verandah views across the gorge are legendary, and the pub’s walls are adorned with local art and memorabilia.
- Sunset Viewing: The cliffs ignite in shades of crimson and orange as the sun drops behind the range. The viewing platform near the car park is the perfect spot to watch the show.
- Birdwatching: The permanent water attracts a variety of birds, including corellas, galahs, and the rare black-footed rock wallaby. Early morning is best for sightings.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours to explore the gorge, swim, and enjoy the views. If you’re staying for a meal at the Homestead, budget another hour. Many travellers pass through on a day trip from Alice Springs (about 130 km west), but the gorge also works well as a stop on a multi-day self-drive itinerary along the Red Centre Way. For a more immersive experience, consider staying overnight at the Homestead or camping nearby to catch sunrise and sunset.
