Ellery Creek Big Hole is one of the West MacDonnell Ranges' most beloved waterholes, a permanent pool of cool, clear water framed by towering red cliffs and ghost gums. It's a classic outback oasis where the desert heat dissolves into blissful swimming and lazy picnicking. The site holds deep significance for the Arrernte people, and the surrounding landscape tells stories of Dreamtime creation. For travellers on the Red Centre Way, it's an essential midday pause.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, which is ample time for a swim, the short Dolomite Walk, and a relaxed picnic. If you want to linger and soak up the serenity, allow half a day – bring a book and float in the water as the afternoon light turns the cliffs golden. The waterhole is best visited in the cooler months (April–September); summer swimming is still possible but the water can be very cold and afternoon storms may roll in.
