Ormiston Gorge is a stunning natural amphitheatre carved into the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering one of the Northern Territory's most rewarding short walks and a permanent waterhole perfect for a refreshing dip. The sheer red quartzite cliffs and ghost gum-lined creek create a dramatic, serene landscape that feels a world away from the beaten track.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Pound Walk: A 7.5 km loop that climbs to a lookout over the gorge and then circles the vast, flat pound – a natural enclosure ringed by ancient cliffs. The contrast of red rock, blue sky, and green river red gums is breathtaking.
- Waterhole Swim: At the gorge's entrance, a deep, clear waterhole invites a cooling swim. In the heat of the day, there's nothing better than floating while gazing up at the towering cliffs.
- Ghost Gum Lookout: A shorter, steep climb rewards with a classic outback view: a solitary ghost gum clinging to the cliff edge above the waterhole – an iconic photo op.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for black-footed rock wallabies, zebra finches, and, if you're lucky, the rare black-flanked rock-wallaby. Birdlife is abundant near the water.
- Gorge Walk: A gentle walk upstream from the waterhole leads you deeper into the gorge, where the walls narrow and the silence is profound. It's a favourite for photographers at golden hour.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day (3–4 hours) here, enough to complete the Ormiston Pound Walk and enjoy a swim. If you're short on time, the Ghost Gum Lookout and a dip can be done in 1–2 hours. For a more immersive experience, combine with a picnic lunch and some quiet time by the water. The gorge is also a wonderful spot for sunset photography, so consider staying until the light fades.
