Stretching 62 km through the ancient sandstone escarpment of Nitmiluk National Park, the Jatbula Trail is one of Australia’s most rewarding multi-day hikes. Following a traditional Jawoyn pathway, this five-day, four-night trek leads you past cascading waterfalls, plunge pools, and sweeping views over the Katherine River valley. It’s a wild, self-guided journey that demands preparation but rewards with profound solitude and connection to the land.
Highlights & What to See
- Biddlecombe Cascades – A series of tiered waterfalls and deep, clear pools perfect for a cooling swim after the first day’s walk.
- 17 Mile Valley – A dramatic, narrow gorge flanked by vertical cliffs; the trail traverses its rim with heart-stopping views.
- Southern Rockhole – A permanent waterhole set in a rocky amphitheatre where you can bathe beneath a small cascade.
- Smyth’s Lookout – The highest point on the trail, offering a 360-degree panorama of the escarpment and distant Arnhem Land.
- Leliyn (Edith Falls) – The spectacular finish: a large, swimmable waterfall plunging into a deep pool, with campground facilities and a short walk to the upper falls.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers complete the Jatbula Trail in five days and four nights, walking 10–16 km per day on well-defined but rugged paths. You’ll need to carry all food, camping gear, and water (though there are reliable water sources along the way, which must be treated). The trail is open from April to October (the dry season); plan to book your walk-in permit and campsites well in advance, as numbers are strictly limited to preserve the experience.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
