Katherine
Katherine is the gateway to the rugged Top End, a frontier town where the outback meets the tropics. With the mighty Katherine River carving through ancient sandstone gorges, this is a place for swimming under waterfalls, cruising through Nitmiluk National Park, and learning about Indigenous culture. The town itself is laid-back, with a handful of good cafes and pubs, but it's the natural wonders that draw travellers here.
Highlights & What to See
- Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge – A series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River. Explore by canoe, cruise, or hike the rim for breathtaking views. The Jatbula Trail (a multi-day trek) starts here.
- Katherine Hot Springs – Natural thermal pools right in town, perfect for a relaxing dip after a day of exploring. Crystal-clear water and palm-fringed banks.
- Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park – A limestone cave system with guided tours showcasing stalactites, stalagmites, and unique wildlife like the rare ghost bat.
- Top Didj Cultural Experience – An immersive Aboriginal cultural tour where you can try your hand at spear-throwing, didgeridoo playing, and bush tucker tasting.
- Springvale Homestead – One of the oldest homesteads in the NT, now offering accommodation and a great outback pub with live music and cold beers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to experience the gorges, hot springs, and a cultural tour. If you're hiking the Jatbula Trail, allow five days. Many travellers use Katherine as a stopover between Darwin and Alice Springs, so even one full day can cover a gorge cruise and the hot springs.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Darwin – Three hours north, Australia's northern capital is a tropical hub with markets, waterfront dining, and easy access to Litchfield and Kakadu.
- Kakadu National Park – A World Heritage site with ancient rock art, wetlands, and abundant wildlife. Combine with Katherine for a complete Top End adventure.
- Litchfield National Park – Known for its spectacular waterfalls, magnetic termite mounds, and swimming holes. A great day trip from Darwin or en route to Katherine.
- Alice Springs – The red centre's heart, about 12 hours south via the Stuart Highway. Perfect for a road trip linking the Top End with Uluru and Kings Canyon.
- Kings Canyon – A stunning sandstone canyon in Watarrka National Park. Best combined with Uluru and Alice Springs on a longer outback itinerary.
- Uluru (Ayers Rock) – Iconic monolith and cultural landmark. While far, it's often part of a grand outback loop from Katherine.
