Deep in the Northern Territory's limestone country, about 27 km south of Katherine, Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park offers a surprising underground world of ancient limestone formations, stalactites, and stalagmites. The caves, formed over 500 million years, are a haven for wildlife, including the rare orange horseshoe bat. The park is easily reached via the Stuart Highway and makes for a fascinating half-day detour on a journey between Darwin and Alice Springs.
Highlights & What to See
- Guided Cave Tours – The only way to explore the main caverns; knowledgeable rangers lead 45-minute tours through chambers adorned with shawl-like flowstones and helictites.
- Limestone Formations – Marvel at the delicate 'cave coral', straw stalactites, and the towering 'Cathedral' chamber with its impressive acoustics.
- Wildlife Spotting – Look for the rare orange horseshoe bat and listen for the 'gekkering' of ghost bats; keep an eye out for wallabies and birds on the nature trails above ground.
- Nature Walks – Two short self-guided walks (1 km each) through monsoonal vine forest and limestone woodland, with interpretive signs about local flora and traditional Jawoyn Aboriginal culture.
- Butterfly Gorge – A nearby seasonal waterhole and gorge (accessible via 4WD in the dry season) where you can swim and spot butterflies.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend about 1.5–2 hours at the park, including the guided cave tour (book ahead in peak season) and a stroll on the nature walks. If you add Butterfly Gorge or a picnic, allow 3–4 hours. The caves are best visited in the dry season (April–September) when the park is fully accessible and the humidity is lower. Combine with a visit to Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk National Park) for a full day of adventure.
