Mataranka Hot Springs is a thermal oasis in the heart of the Northern Territory, where crystal-clear 34°C water bubbles up from deep underground into a palm-fringed pool. This is the quintessential Outlander experience — the same landscape that inspired the iconic novel and film, with lush paperbark forests and a laid-back swimming vibe that makes it a must-stop on the Stuart Highway.
Highlights & What to See
- Thermal Pool: Soak in the main spring-fed swimming area — the water is perfectly warm year-round and incredibly clear, surrounded by tropical vegetation.
- Bitter Springs: A short walk or drive away, this quieter, more natural thermal pool offers a serene float in tea-tree-stained water with a sandy bottom.
- Jalmurark (Elsey) Walk: A 1.5-km loop through paperbark forest and along the Waterhouse River, rich with birdlife and the chance to spot freshwater turtles.
- Mataranka Homestead: The historic homestead was used as a location for the film We of the Never Never; it now houses a bar, restaurant, and basic accommodation.
- Elsey National Park: The springs sit within this park, which also offers bush camping, scenic drives, and the remnants of the original Elsey Station homestead.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day to a full day here. Arrive early to enjoy the main pool before the crowds (especially in the dry season), then explore Bitter Springs and the short walk. If you’re passing through on a road trip, a two-hour stop is enough for a quick dip and a stroll, but you’ll wish you’d stayed longer. For a relaxing break, plan to spend the afternoon floating between the two springs.
