Katherine Gorge – part of Nitmiluk National Park – is a dramatic series of thirteen sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River, about 30km east of the town of Katherine. The sheer cliffs, tranquil pools and ancient rock art create a landscape that begs to be explored by canoe, cruise or hiking boot. It’s a place where the outback meets the water, offering a cool, green escape from the red dust.
Highlights & What to See
- Nitmiluk Gorge Cruise: The classic way to experience the gorge – a guided boat tour takes you through the first two or three gorges, with commentary on geology, wildlife and Jawoyn Aboriginal culture. Look for freshwater crocodiles sunning on the rocks.
- Canoeing the Gorge: Rent a canoe and paddle at your own pace through the calm waters of the first gorge. It’s a serene, up-close way to appreciate the scale of the cliffs and the silence of the bush.
- Walking Trails: The Jatbula Trail (a 5-day, 58km trek) is one of Australia’s great walks, but shorter options like the 3.6km Baruwei Loop offer superb views over the gorge at sunset.
- Ancient Rock Art: Several sites along the gorge walls feature Jawoyn rock paintings, some of which are estimated to be thousands of years old. A cruise with a cultural guide provides the best access and context.
- Swimming at Leliyn (Edith Falls): A short drive north, this series of plunge pools and waterfalls is the perfect spot for a refreshing dip after a day on the gorge. The 2.6km Leliyn Trail loops past the upper pools.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors devote a full day to Katherine Gorge – take a morning cruise, then hike a short trail or canoe in the afternoon. If you’re short on time, a half-day (3–4 hours) is enough for a cruise and a quick walk. For keen walkers, the Jatbula Trail requires 5 days and advance planning.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Katherine Town: The gateway to the gorge, with supplies, accommodation and the Katherine Museum.
- Nitmiluk National Park: The park itself contains many other gorges, waterfalls and walks beyond the main gorge.
- Edith Falls (Leliyn): A stunning swimming spot about 40km north of Katherine Gorge, well worth a half-day detour.
- Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park: Limestone caves with guided tours, about 30km south of Katherine – a cool underground contrast to the gorge.
- Mataranka Hot Springs: About 100km south, these thermal pools are a relaxing stop on the way to or from Katherine.
