The Jatbula Trail is a 62-kilometer, five-day walk through the ancient landscapes of Nitmiluk National Park, tracing the traditional songlines of the Jawoyn people. This is one of Australia's great bushwalks, offering a deeply immersive journey through sandstone escarpments, monsoon forests, and hidden waterfalls. Unlike the more famous Larapinta Trail, the Jatbula is a point-to-point trek that rewards with swimming holes, rock art, and a genuine sense of remoteness.
Highlights & What to See
- Biddlecombe Cascades: A series of tiered waterfalls and deep plunge pools perfect for a refreshing dip after a day of hiking.
- 17 Mile Valley: Walk through a dramatic sandstone gorge with towering cliffs and abundant wildlife, including wallabies and birdlife.
- Lily Ponds: Serene, spring-fed pools surrounded by lush vegetation – an idyllic spot for lunch and a swim.
- Jawoyn Rock Art: View ancient Aboriginal rock paintings at sites like the Amphitheatre, offering a profound connection to the region's cultural heritage.
- Nitmiluk Gorge: The trail ends at the southern end of this iconic gorge, where you can take a cruise or continue exploring the park.
- Wildlife Encounters: Keep an eye out for freshwater crocodiles, agile wallabies, and a dazzling array of birds, including the majestic white-bellied sea eagle.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate five days and four nights for the full 62-kilometer trek, walking an average of 12-15 kilometers per day. The trail is one-way, so you'll need to arrange transport to the start (often from Katherine) and pick-up at the end. Most walkers complete it between May and September, when temperatures are milder and water sources are reliable. Pace yourself to fully enjoy the swimming holes and side trips – this is not a race.
