Jim Jim Falls is one of Kakadu National Park’s most dramatic waterfalls, plunging over 200 metres from the Arnhem Land escarpment into a deep plunge pool. Accessible only during the dry season (typically May to October) via a rough 4WD track, the journey itself is an adventure through monsoon forest and sandstone country. The reward is a breathtaking cascade that thunders into a shaded pool, surrounded by ancient cliffs and lush vegetation. This is a place of raw, primal beauty that leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.
Highlights & What to See
- The Main Plunge Pool: After a short but steep walk from the car park (approx. 1.5 km return), you’ll reach the base of the falls. The pool is deep and inviting, perfect for a refreshing swim on a hot day — just be mindful of submerged rocks and changing water levels.
- Scenic Flight Views: For a truly unforgettable perspective, take a scenic helicopter or light-plane flight over the falls. From the air, you’ll see the full height of the cascade and the surrounding sandstone escarpments in all their glory.
- Wildlife Spotting: The monsoon forest around the falls is home to a variety of birds, including rainbow bee-eaters and great bowerbirds. Keep an eye out for wallabies and goannas along the trail.
- Nearby Twin Falls: Just a short drive away, Twin Falls is another spectacular waterfall that can be explored by boat or on foot (when the crossing is open). It’s a great addition to a day trip from Jim Jim.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate a full day to experience Jim Jim Falls properly. The 4WD drive from the Kakadu Highway takes about 1–1.5 hours each way, plus the walk to the plunge pool and time to swim and take photos. If you’re combining it with a visit to Twin Falls, plan for a long day (8–10 hours). For those short on time, a scenic flight over both falls can be done in 1–2 hours and still gives you a sense of their scale.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kakadu National Park: Jim Jim Falls is located within Kakadu, so you can easily explore other iconic sites like Ubirr, Nourlangie Rock, and Yellow Water Billabong on a multi-day itinerary.
- Gunlom Plunge Pool: About 2 hours’ drive south, this natural infinity pool atop a waterfall offers stunning views and excellent swimming.
- Pine Creek: A historic gold-mining town with a handful of pubs and heritage buildings, perfect for a stopover on the way to or from Kakadu.
- Litchfield National Park: About 3 hours west, Litchfield offers a different landscape of magnetic termite mounds, waterfalls, and swimming holes — a great contrast to Kakadu.
