Litchfield National Park is a tropical paradise just a 90-minute drive from Darwin, offering a stunning contrast to the arid landscapes of the Red Centre. With its cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear plunge pools, and ancient termite mounds, this park is a must-visit for nature lovers and adventurers alike. The paved roads make it easily accessible for a self-drive itinerary, and the swimming holes provide a refreshing escape from the tropical heat.
Highlights & What to See
- Florence Falls – A double-tiered waterfall plunging into a large, emerald pool perfect for swimming. The short walk down to the falls is lined with monsoon forest.
- Wangli Falls – One of the park's most popular spots, with a wide cascade and a large swimming hole surrounded by lush vegetation. During the dry season, you can also walk behind the falls.
- Buley Rockholes – A series of natural rock pools connected by small cascades, ideal for a relaxing soak. Arrive early to avoid crowds.
- Termite Mounds – The park is famous for its towering magnetic termite mounds, some up to two metres high, aligned north-south to regulate temperature.
- Tjaynera Falls (Sandy Creek) – A more secluded waterfall reached via a 4WD track, offering a peaceful swimming spot with fewer visitors.
- Tabletop Swamp – A birdwatcher's haven, home to waterbirds like jacanas and magpie geese, especially after rain.
Suggested Time to Spend
To fully experience Litchfield, plan for two days. This allows you to explore the main waterfalls and swimming holes at a relaxed pace, plus take short walks to viewpoints and the termite mounds. If you're short on time, a full day can cover the highlights along the main sealed road, but you'll miss the more remote spots like Tjaynera Falls. Stay overnight at one of the park's campgrounds or eco-lodges to enjoy the sunset and early morning wildlife.
