In the heart of the red desert, Boggy Hole is a surprising oasis along the Finke River, one of the world's oldest river systems. This permanent waterhole, nestled within Finke Gorge National Park, offers a rare chance to swim, camp, and soak up the stark beauty of the Central Australian outback. The contrast of cool, clear water against the rugged, ochre-hued cliffs makes it a magical spot for a refreshing dip after a dusty 4WD adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim in the waterhole – The main draw is the crystal-clear, spring-fed pool. It's a welcome relief from the desert heat, and the surrounding red rocks create a stunning natural amphitheatre.
- Explore the Finke River – Walk along the sandy riverbed and marvel at the ancient river red gums. The river itself is a living geological museum, with layers of history visible in the gorge walls.
- Spot wildlife at dusk – Keep an eye out for black-footed rock wallabies, dingoes, and a variety of birdlife that come to the waterhole. The golden hour light on the cliffs is spectacular.
- 4WD adventure – Reaching Boggy Hole requires a high-clearance 4WD along the sandy Finke River track. The journey is an adventure in itself, following the riverbed through the park.
- Camp under the stars – The basic campground at Boggy Hole is one of the best places in the NT for stargazing. No light pollution means the Milky Way shines brilliantly.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day or an overnight stay at Boggy Hole. The 4WD drive from the park entrance takes about 1.5–2 hours each way, so plan to arrive early to make the most of the swimming and walking. If you camp overnight, you'll have the waterhole almost to yourself after day-trippers leave – perfect for a sunset swim and a campfire dinner. A two-day, one-night visit allows you to truly unwind and explore the gorge at a leisurely pace.
