About 100 kilometres south of Katherine, the Mataranka Thermal Pools are a shimmering oasis in the Top End’s dry landscape. Fed by the underground Roper River, these constant 34°C springs pool beneath a canopy of paperbark trees and pandanus palms, creating a natural spa that feels like a secret swimming hole. The water is crystal clear and tinted a surreal blue-green by dissolved minerals – you can float for hours watching the dappled light filter through the foliage. It’s a quintessential outback experience and a welcome respite after exploring the nearby gorges and national parks.
Highlights & What to See
- Bitter Springs – A short walk from the main pools, this smaller, more intimate thermal spring is perfect for a quiet soak. The water is slightly warmer and the setting feels wilder, with tree roots dipping into the clear water.
- Mataranka Homestead Pool – The larger, more developed pool adjacent to the caravan park. It’s equipped with steps and a grassy bank, making it easy to ease into the warm water. The surrounding gardens are home to curious birds and the occasional wallaby.
- Elsey National Park – The thermal pools are the centrepiece, but the park also offers short walks through monsoon vine forest and along the Roper River. Look for the monument to We of the Never Never author Jeannie Gunn.
- Rainbow Spring – A lesser-visited thermal spring within the park, accessible via a 1.5 km walk. It’s smaller and more secluded, often with fewer visitors, giving you a true sense of discovery.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day at the pools – a couple of hours to soak, wander the short trails, and have a picnic. If you’re driving from Katherine, it’s an easy day trip (about an hour each way). For a more relaxed experience, stay overnight at the Mataranka Homestead or the nearby caravan park so you can enjoy the pools early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the light is golden and the crowds are thin.
