Edith Falls, part of the Nitmiluk National Park, is a stunning series of cascading waterfalls and plunge pools about 60km north of Katherine. The main waterfall plunges into a large, swimmable pool surrounded by pandanus and paperbark trees, offering a refreshing escape from the tropical heat. The area is rich in Jawoyn Aboriginal culture, and the walk to the upper pools provides insights into the landscape's significance. It's a must-visit for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking a serene spot to cool off.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim in the main plunge pool – The large, clear pool at the base of the 15m waterfall is perfect for a dip. The water is cool and inviting, with sandy edges for lounging.
- Upper pools and cascades – A 2.6km return walk (Sweat Walk) leads to a series of smaller pools and cascades, offering a more secluded swimming experience and panoramic views of the escarpment.
- Leliyn Trail – This 3.7km loop walk around the top of the falls provides stunning views of the gorge and the surrounding bushland. It's a moderate walk with some steep sections.
- Picnic and birdwatching – The main picnic area has tables and barbecues under shady trees, and you can spot rainbow bee-eaters, kingfishers, and other birdlife.
- Aboriginal rock art – Near the carpark, a short detour leads to a rock shelter with ancient Jawoyn paintings, offering a glimpse into the area's cultural heritage.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–4 hours at Edith Falls, which allows time for a swim, a short walk, and a picnic. If you want to hike the Leliyn Trail and explore the upper pools, plan for a half-day (4–5 hours). Arrive early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and the midday heat, especially during the dry season (May–September). The falls are a popular stop on a self-drive trip between Darwin and Katherine.
