Katherine Hot Springs is a natural thermal oasis located just a few kilometres from the town of Katherine in the Northern Territory. Fed by the underground Tindal limestone aquifer, these crystal-clear 60°C waters cool to a pleasant bathing temperature as they flow over rocks into a series of shallow pools. Surrounded by pandanus palms and paperbark trees, the springs offer a serene spot to soak after exploring nearby gorges or the Savannah Way. The water is exceptionally clear, making it feel like a natural infinity pool.
Highlights & What to See
- Natural thermal pools: The main pool is large and deep enough for swimming, with a gentle current and a pebbly bottom. Upstream, smaller pools are warmer and more intimate.
- Scenic walking track: A short, easy trail follows the creek from the carpark to the springs, passing through monsoon vine forest and offering views of the water.
- Picnic and barbecue facilities: Shaded tables and free electric barbecues make it easy to turn a soak into a full afternoon outing.
- Aboriginal culture connection: The springs are part of the traditional lands of the Jawoyn people, who have used these waters for thousands of years. Information boards share local Dreamtime stories.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at the springs, which is enough time for a leisurely soak, a short walk, and a picnic. The water temperature is most comfortable in the cooler months (May–September) or early morning. If you're driving the Savannah Way, the springs make a perfect lunch stop or a refreshing end to a day of exploration.
