Dunmarra
Dunmarra is a tiny roadhouse settlement on the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory, roughly halfway between Katherine and Tennant Creek. It's not a destination in itself but a practical pit stop for travellers crossing the vast outback, offering fuel, basic supplies, and a cold beer. The real draw is the surrounding landscape of spinifex plains, termite mounds, and red dirt under enormous skies – a quintessential slice of remote Australia.
Highlights & What to See
- Dunmarra Roadhouse – The heart of the settlement, serving as a fuel stop, pub, and general store. Grab a pie and a drink, chat with locals, and soak up the outback atmosphere.
- Termite Mounds – The surrounding plains are dotted with enormous magnetic termite mounds, some over two metres tall. They're fascinating to photograph, especially in the golden light of late afternoon.
- Stuart Highway – The drive itself is the attraction. The endless horizon, changing colours of the desert, and occasional wildlife (kangaroos, emus, wedge-tailed eagles) make this a classic outback road trip.
- Stargazing – With zero light pollution, the night sky here is breathtaking. Pull over safely on a clear night to see the Milky Way in all its glory.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dunmarra is a brief stop – plan for 15–30 minutes to refuel, stretch your legs, and grab a snack. If you're travelling between Katherine and Alice Springs, it's a convenient place to break the journey. There's no reason to stay overnight unless you're camping rough; most travellers push on to Daly Waters (north) or Tennant Creek (south).
