Kings Canyon Resort is your gateway to the dramatic landscapes of Watarrka National Park, offering a comfortable base for exploring one of the Red Centre's most spectacular natural wonders. Perched on the edge of the outback, this resort blends rugged charm with essential amenities, making it an ideal stop on a self-drive itinerary between Alice Springs and Uluru. The star attraction is Kings Canyon itself, a towering sandstone amphitheatre carved over millions of years, where you can walk the rim or follow the creek bed through a prehistoric palm-filled gorge.
Highlights & What to See
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk – A challenging 6km loop that rewards with jaw-dropping views of the canyon walls, the 'Lost City' rock formations, and the lush Garden of Eden waterhole. Start early to beat the heat.
- Kings Creek Walk – A gentler 2.6km stroll along the canyon floor, perfect for spotting ancient cycads and listening to the calls of zebra finches and spinifex pigeons.
- Sunset viewing platform – Located within the resort, this spot offers golden-hour panoramas across the desert to the George Gill Range.
- Outback BBQ & stargazing – After dark, the resort hosts communal dinners and astronomy talks, where you can learn about the Southern Cross and the Milky Way under some of the world's clearest skies.
- Helicopter scenic flights – For a bird's-eye perspective, joy flights soar over the canyon and the surrounding salt pans and spinifex plains.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day and two nights at Kings Canyon Resort. Arrive in the late afternoon, catch sunset at the lookout, and tackle the Rim Walk early the next morning (allow 3–4 hours). If you're short on time, a single overnight stop is enough to do the Rim Walk and enjoy the resort's facilities. Those with more time can add a helicopter flight or explore the nearby Kathleen Springs walk.
