West Macdonnell Ranges

Stretching west from Alice Springs, the West Macdonnell Ranges are a dramatic spine of ancient quartzite ridges, deep gorges, and permanent waterholes. This is the Red Centre at its most accessible: a series of stunning natural landmarks linked by a sealed road that begs to be explored on a self-drive day trip or as part of a longer outback itinerary. The ochre cliffs shift colour with the sun, and the silence is broken only by bird calls and the rustle of spinifex.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers spend a full day driving the West Macdonnell Ranges from Alice Springs, covering the highlights from Simpsons Gap to Glen Helen Gorge. To truly soak in the scenery and do a couple of short walks, allow two days – you can stay overnight at Glen Helen Resort or camp at one of the designated sites. If you’re a keen hiker, budget three days to tackle the Larapinta Trail sections or summit Mount Sonder.
