Stretching west from Alice Springs, the West Macdonnell Ranges are a dramatic spine of ancient quartzite ridges, deep gorges, and permanent waterholes. This is the Red Centre at its most accessible: a series of stunning natural landmarks linked by a sealed road that begs to be explored on a self-drive day trip or as part of a longer outback itinerary. The ochre cliffs shift colour with the sun, and the silence is broken only by bird calls and the rustle of spinifex.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpsons Gap – A sheer-walled gap with a permanent waterhole, home to black-footed rock-wallabies; best visited in early morning or late afternoon for wildlife and soft light.
- Standley Chasm – A narrow, 80-metre-deep cleft in the rock that blazes orange when the sun is directly overhead (around midday). A short walk leads to the chasm floor.
- Ochre Pits – A sacred Aboriginal site where ochre has been mined for thousands of years; the multi-coloured cliffs are a photographer's dream.
- Glen Helen Gorge – A permanent waterhole at the base of towering red cliffs; a great spot for a swim or picnic, with a nearby resort for refreshments.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – A popular swimming hole surrounded by high dolomite cliffs; the water is cool and inviting on a hot day.
- Serpentine Gorge – A less-crowded gorge with a short walk to a lookout over the waterhole; watch for the rare cycads that grow here.
- Mount Sonder Lookout – The fourth-highest peak in the Northern Territory, offering panoramic views of the ranges; the walk to the summit is a challenging full-day hike for experienced trekkers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend a full day driving the West Macdonnell Ranges from Alice Springs, covering the highlights from Simpsons Gap to Glen Helen Gorge. To truly soak in the scenery and do a couple of short walks, allow two days – you can stay overnight at Glen Helen Resort or camp at one of the designated sites. If you’re a keen hiker, budget three days to tackle the Larapinta Trail sections or summit Mount Sonder.
