Hidden in the West MacDonnell Ranges, the Ochre Pits are a sacred Aboriginal site where vibrant ochre deposits have been mined for tens of thousands of years. The layered cliffs of white, yellow, red and purple ochre form a striking natural palette, used traditionally for body painting, rock art and ceremony. It’s a place of profound cultural significance and raw beauty, best appreciated with respect and quiet contemplation.
Highlights & What to See
- Vivid ochre cliffs – Walk the short boardwalk to view the colourful seams of ochre embedded in the quartzite cliffs; the colours shift with the light.
- Cultural significance – Read interpretive signs explaining the traditional mining and trading of ochre by Arrernte people, who still use the site today.
- Photography – Capture the striking contrast between the ochre layers and the surrounding red desert landscape, especially in the late afternoon.
- Peaceful atmosphere – Unlike busier sites, the Ochre Pits feel remote and serene, offering a chance to connect with ancient traditions.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30 minutes to an hour to explore the boardwalk, read the signs and soak up the atmosphere. It’s a perfect quick stop along the Larapinta Trail or as part of a half-day drive from Alice Springs along the West MacDonnell Ranges. Combine it with visits to nearby gorges and waterholes for a full day out.
