Glen Helen Gorge is a striking natural landmark in the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 130 km west of Alice Springs. This deep, narrow gorge carved through ancient red quartzite offers a dramatic landscape of towering cliffs and a permanent waterhole, often frequented by birdlife and occasionally by black-footed rock wallabies. It's a quintessential Outlander experience, perfect for a refreshing dip or a peaceful walk amidst the rugged beauty of the Red Centre.
Highlights & What to See
- Gorge Walk: Follow the short walking track along the gorge to the waterhole, where you can swim in the cool, clear water under the sheer cliff walls.
- Scenic Lookout: Climb the trail to the lookout for panoramic views of the gorge and the surrounding ranges, especially stunning at sunset.
- Wildlife Watching: Keep an eye out for black-footed rock wallabies, especially in the early morning or late afternoon, and a variety of birds like zebra finches and honeyeaters.
- Photography: The contrast between the red rocks, blue sky, and green water makes for spectacular photos, particularly during the golden hours.
- Swimming: Take a dip in the permanent waterhole, a welcome relief from the heat, but always check conditions as water levels can vary.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend between 1 and 2 hours at Glen Helen Gorge, which is enough to complete the short walk, enjoy a swim, and take photos. If you want to hike the longer trails or simply soak in the serenity, allow half a day. The gorge is best visited in the cooler months (April to September) and is a popular stop on the way to or from Kings Canyon or Uluru.
