Ellery Creek Big Hole is a stunning waterhole and gorge about 90 kilometres west of Alice Springs, tucked into the West MacDonnell Ranges. The dramatic red quartzite cliffs, cool permanent waterhole, and sandy banks make it one of the most popular swimming and picnic spots in the region. The drive out along Larapinta Drive is a scenic journey through the range, and the site itself feels like an oasis in the arid landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- The waterhole: A deep, clear pool surrounded by towering red cliffs, perfect for a refreshing swim in the warmer months. The water is cool and inviting, and the setting is simply spectacular.
- The gorge walk: A short but rewarding walk from the carpark leads you into the gorge itself. The trail is easy and offers great views of the rock formations and the waterhole from above.
- Dolomite Walk: A 1.5-kilometre loop that takes you through a unique landscape of white dolomite rocks, contrasting with the red quartzite. It's a fascinating geological detour.
- Picnicking and birdwatching: The area has shaded picnic tables and a grassy area. Look for black-footed rock-wallabies and a variety of birdlife including zebra finches and honeyeaters.
- Sunset views: The cliffs glow a deep ochre in the late afternoon light, making it a beautiful spot to linger as the day ends.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend two to three hours at Ellery Creek Big Hole, combining a swim, a short walk, and a picnic. If you plan to do the Dolomite Walk and have a leisurely lunch, allow half a day. It's a perfect morning or afternoon trip from Alice Springs, and many travellers combine it with other West MacDonnell sites on a day drive.
