The drive from Sydney to Brisbane is one of Australia's great coastal journeys, a 900-kilometre ribbon of Pacific Highway that unfurls through national parks, surf breaks, and laid-back beach towns. This isn't a route to rush: the real magic lies in the detours — whale-watching off Port Stephens, paddling the Myall Lakes, and sipping coffee in Byron Bay's bohemian lanes. With at least five to seven days, you can taste the best of the NSW north coast before crossing into Queensland's subtropical sprawl.
Highlights & What to See
- Port Stephens – A vast natural harbour where you can sandboard on Stockton Beach's dunes, cruise with bottlenose dolphins, and hike the Tomaree Head summit for 360-degree coastal views.
- Myall Lakes National Park – Paddle a kayak through mirror-still lakes fringed by paperbarks; keep an eye out for sea eagles and goannas.
- Crowdy Bay National Park – Wild, untamed beach walks and the chance to spot migrating humpback whales from the headland (June–November).
- Coffs Harbour – The Big Banana is kitschy fun, but the real draw is the Solitary Islands Coastal Walk, a 60-kilometre trail with rainforest, beaches, and lookout points.
- Dorrigo National Park – A World Heritage Gondwana rainforest with the Skywalk platform suspended above the canopy; look for satin bowerbirds and glow-worms at night.
- Byron Bay – Australia's easternmost point, where the Cape Byron walking track delivers sunrise over the lighthouse, and the town's farmers markets and craft breweries fuel a relaxed foodie scene.
Suggested Time to Spend
Five days is the absolute minimum to cover the highlights without feeling rushed; seven to ten days allows for spontaneous stops and deeper exploration. Break the drive into manageable two-to-three-hour legs: Sydney to Port Stephens (day 1), Port Stephens to Coffs Harbour via Myall Lakes and Crowdy Bay (days 2–3), Coffs Harbour to Byron Bay with a Dorrigo detour (days 4–5), then Byron Bay to Brisbane (day 6). Factor in at least one full day in Byron to soak up the beach-and-brunch rhythm.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hunter Valley – Australia's oldest wine region, just a 90-minute detour from the Pacific Highway; famous for semillon and shiraz, plus hot-air ballooning over vine-striped hills.
- Nelson Bay – The heart of Port Stephens, with dolphin-watching cruises, the dune-fringed Stockton Beach, and excellent seafood at the marina.
- Taree & Manning Valley – A lush hinterland of dairy farms and subtropical rainforest; the Ellenborough Falls are among the tallest in NSW.
- South West Rocks – Home to Trial Bay Gaol, a historic prison perched on a headland, and superb snorkelling at Fish Rock Cave.
- Yamba – A chilled-out surf town at the mouth of the Clarence River, with national park walks, a working lighthouse, and some of the best fish and chips on the coast.
- Gold Coast – From Byron it's an hour north to Surfers Paradise, theme parks, and the lush hinterland of Springbrook and Lamington national parks.
