Dorrigo National Park is a lush World Heritage-listed rainforest wonderland on the New South Wales mid-north coast, part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia. Just an hour's drive west of Coffs Harbour, this park offers a breathtaking escape into ancient, verdant wilderness with crystal-clear creeks and dramatic waterfalls. For international travellers, it's a must-do detour on a Sydney-to-Brisbane road trip or a day trip from Coffs Harbour.
Highlights & What to See
- Skywalk Walkway – A 70-metre-long cantilevered boardwalk that soars above the rainforest canopy, offering panoramic views of the Bellinger Valley and the coast on clear days.
- Wonga Walk – A 6.5 km circuit descending into the rainforest past towering red cedar trees, palm groves, and the stunning Crystal Shower Falls, where you can walk behind the cascade.
- Never Never Rainforest Walk – A shorter, wheelchair-accessible loop that immerses you in cool, fern-filled gullies and along the bubbling Never Never River.
- Dangar Falls – Just outside the park near Dorrigo township, a powerful 30-metre waterfall plunges into a deep pool – perfect for a picnic and a quick dip.
- Birdwatching – The park is a haven for birdlife, including regent bowerbirds, wonga pigeons, and the elusive paradise riflebird. Early morning walks are best.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least half a day to explore the park’s highlights – the Skywalk and a short rainforest walk can be done in 2–3 hours. For a fuller experience, plan a full day to hike the Wonga Walk (3–4 hours) and visit Dangar Falls. If you're keen on birdwatching or photography, consider an overnight stay at the Dorrigo Mountain Resort or camping at the nearby Never Never picnic area (no camping in the park itself).
