Stradbroke Island, just off the coast of Brisbane, is a sun-drenched paradise of white-sand beaches, turquoise lakes, and ancient sand dunes. This is where you come to escape the city buzz and immerse yourself in raw coastal beauty. The island splits into two: North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) – the main destination – and South Stradbroke Island, a quieter strip of wilderness. With its rich Aboriginal heritage, world-class surf breaks, and easy-going vibe, Stradbroke Island feels like a slice of the Whitsundays within reach of Queensland's capital.
Highlights & What to See
- Point Lookout – The island's main hub, with dramatic headland walks, the North Gorge Walk for whale watching (June–November), and sweeping views over the Pacific. Don't miss the rock pools at low tide.
- Main Beach – A long stretch of golden sand perfect for swimming, sunbaking, and surfing. The southern end is patrolled in summer, but always heed the flags.
- Brown Lake (Bummiera) – A stunning, tea-tree-stained lake surrounded by paperbark trees. Take a dip in the calm, tannin-rich waters – it's said to be good for the skin.
- Blue Lake (Karboora) – A pristine freshwater lake fed by rainfall, with a walking track that winds through wallum heath. It's a sacred site for the Quandamooka people – swim respectfully.
- Cylinder Beach – A sheltered, family-friendly cove with gentle waves and a lively picnic area. Ideal for a relaxed afternoon.
- Gorge Walk – A 1.5km clifftop trail from Point Lookout to South Gorge, offering breathtaking ocean views and a chance to spot sea eagles, dolphins, and migrating humpbacks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come on a day trip from Brisbane or the Gold Coast, arriving by car ferry or passenger barge. A single day is enough to hit the highlights – take the ferry to Dunwich, drive to Point Lookout, walk the Gorge, and squeeze in a swim at Main Beach or Cylinder Beach. To truly unwind, stay for two to three nights: explore the lakes, hike the island's interior tracks, and watch the sunset from the headland. Accommodation ranges from holiday apartments to camping at Adder Rock. If you're self-driving, note that the ferry from Cleveland to Dunwich runs regularly, but book ahead in peak season.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Moreton Island – Another sand island playground, famous for the Tangalooma Wrecks and sandboarding. A short ferry ride north.
- Brisbane – Queensland's vibrant capital, with its riverside precincts, cultural institutions, and food scene. Just 30 minutes by ferry plus a drive.
- Gold Coast – Surfers Paradise, theme parks, and glamorous beaches. About 90 minutes' drive south of the ferry terminal.
- North Stradbroke Island – The main island itself holds many more beaches, bushwalks, and the historic Dunwich township (with a museum on the island's whaling and sand-mining past).
- South Stradbroke Island – A wild, undeveloped spit of sand accessible only by boat – perfect for kayaking, fishing, and total seclusion.
