Moreton Island
Moreton Island, a sand island paradise just off the coast of Brisbane, is a world away from the city's hustle. With its towering sand dunes, crystal-clear lagoons, and shipwrecks teeming with marine life, this national park offers a raw, untamed escape. Accessible only by ferry or private boat, the island invites you to explore its wild beauty—whether you're sandboarding down the desert-like dunes, snorkelling around the historic Tangalooma Wrecks, or simply soaking up the solitude on a pristine beach.
Highlights & What to See
- Tangalooma Wrecks: A hauntingly beautiful collection of 15 sunken ships just offshore, now a vibrant artificial reef. Snorkel or dive among colourful fish, rays, and even sea turtles.
- Big Sandhills: The island's massive sand dunes, up to 80 metres high, are perfect for sandboarding. Rent a board and race down the slopes for an adrenaline rush.
- Blue Lagoon: A stunning freshwater lake surrounded by tea trees, ideal for a refreshing swim. The water is incredibly clear and calm.
- Mount Tempest: At 280 metres, it's one of the highest coastal sand dunes in the world. The hike to the summit rewards you with panoramic views of the island and the Coral Sea.
- North Point: A remote area where you can spot dolphins, turtles, and migrating humpback whales (June–November) from the cliffs.
- Desert: A vast area of white sand that feels like a mini Sahara. Walk or take a 4WD tour to experience its surreal landscape.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come for a day trip, which is enough to experience sandboarding, snorkelling at the wrecks, and a quick hike. However, to truly appreciate the island's wilderness, stay overnight at one of the campgrounds or eco-resorts. Two to three days allows you to explore the eastern beaches, hike to Mount Tempest, and enjoy a relaxed pace. If you're self-driving, note that a 4WD is essential—the island's sandy tracks are challenging but part of the adventure.
