Stretching from the southern edge of Sydney down to the border of the South Coast, the Shoalhaven Coast is a blissful stretch of golden beaches, lush national parks and laid-back seaside villages. This is where you trade city crowds for uncrowded surf breaks, coastal bushwalks and a genuine taste of coastal New South Wales – think fresh oysters, artisanal bakeries and quiet river towns. It’s an easy detour off the Princes Highway, yet feels a world away from the urban buzz.
Highlights & What to See
- Jervis Bay – home to some of the whitest sand in the world (Hyams Beach) and crystal-clear waters perfect for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and spotting dolphins.
- Booderee National Park – an Aboriginal-owned park with dramatic sea cliffs, secluded coves, and excellent walking trails through coastal heath and rainforest.
- Shoalhaven River – explore the historic river town of Berry, browse its antique shops and galleries, or take a scenic cruise from Nowra.
- Seven Mile Beach National Park – a long, wild beach backed by dunes and spotted gum forest; great for a peaceful walk or birdwatching.
- Local produce & markets – don’t miss the Berry Country Markets (first Sunday of the month) and the fresh seafood at Huskisson’s waterfront eateries.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least two to three days to properly soak up the Shoalhaven Coast. Spend one day exploring Jervis Bay and Booderee National Park, another meandering through Berry and the river towns, and a third for beach-hopping or a coastal walk. If you’re on a tight schedule, a long day trip from Sydney is possible but you’ll miss the relaxed pace that makes this coast special.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kiama – famous for the Kiama Blowhole and its pretty seaside village, just 30 minutes north.
- Ulladulla – a working fishing harbour with a great Saturday market and access to the Murramarang National Park.
- Batemans Bay – gateway to the Eurobodalla region, known for its oysters and peaceful inlets.
- Morton National Park – inland from the coast, offering the spectacular Fitzroy Falls and Pigeon House Mountain walks.
- Canberra – a two-hour drive inland; combine a coast trip with Australia’s capital for a diverse itinerary.
