Ulladulla is a classic South Coast fishing town where the pace slows to the rhythm of the sea. With a working harbour, a string of patrolled beaches, and a hinterland of eucalypt forests, it’s the kind of place that rewards lingering. The town’s name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘safe harbour’, and it still feels like one — a calm base for exploring the wilder bits of the NSW coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Ulladulla Harbour & Breakwater — Watch the fishing fleet come and go, then walk the breakwater for views across the Pacific. In season, you might spot whales migrating.
- Warden Head Reserve — A short walk from the harbour leads to a lighthouse and blowhole; keep an eye out for kangaroos grazing on the headland at dusk.
- Mollymook Beach — Two kilometres of golden sand, patrolled in summer, with a gentle shore break that’s perfect for families and beginner surfers. The northern end is dog-friendly.
- Booderee National Park — Just 20 minutes south, this stunning park on Wreck Bay offers white-sand beaches, Aboriginal rock art, and the crystal-clear waters of Murrays Beach for snorkelling.
- Ulladulla Wildflower Reserve — A pocket of bushland near the town centre with walking trails that burst into colour in spring.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days gives you time to settle in. Spend the first day exploring the harbour and Mollymook, the second on a day trip to Booderee National Park, and the third driving the scenic coastal route north to Jervis Bay or south to Batemans Bay. If you’re just passing through, a half-day stop for fish and chips on the breakwater is still worthwhile.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Jervis Bay — 30 minutes north, with some of the whitest sand in the world at Hyams Beach.
- Milton — A charming historic village in the hills behind Ulladulla, with galleries and a great Sunday farmers’ market.
- Batemans Bay — 45 minutes south, the gateway to the Eurobodalla coast and Clyde River oysters.
- Murramarang National Park — A coastal park with dramatic sea cliffs, rock platforms, and a colony of eastern grey kangaroos on the beach at Pebbly Beach.
- Pigeon House Mountain — A challenging but rewarding hike with panoramic views from the top; about 45 minutes inland from Ulladulla.
