Stretching from the coast to the escarpment, the Nambucca Valley is a lush, laid-back corner of the North Coast that rewards travellers who slow down. The Nambucca River meanders through farmland and rainforest, while the beaches at Nambucca Heads offer classic NSW surf breaks. This is a place for paddling in the river, spotting koalas in the wild, and soaking up the creative energy of the local arts community.
Highlights & What to See
- Nambucca Heads & Shelly Beach: A headland with a coastal walk, a sheltered beach for swimming, and the famous V-Wall – a sea wall covered in colourful graffiti messages painted by travellers.
- Nambucca River & Island: Canoe or kayak the placid river, or take a cruise to spot sea eagles and stingrays. The island has a walking track through paperbark forest.
- Macksville: The valley's main town, with a heritage main street, the Nambucca Valley Art Centre, and a Saturday market selling local produce and crafts.
- Bowraville: A historic riverside village with a pub, a museum in a former bank, and the Bowraville Theatre, a restored art deco cinema.
- Scotts Head: A patrolled surf beach with a long, sandy stretch, a rockpool, and a coastal walk to a lighthouse lookout.
- Nambucca Valley Conservation Areas: Drive into the hinterland to find rainforest walks, waterfalls, and koala habitat – the Yuraygir National Park nearby also has excellent coastal walks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days allows you to explore the valley's highlights at a relaxed pace. Spend one day on the coast – walk the Nambucca Heads headland, swim at Shelly Beach, and paint a message on the V-Wall. Dedicate a second day to the river and hinterland: canoe the Nambucca, visit Macksville's market, and take a short rainforest walk. If you have a third day, drive to Scotts Head for a surf lesson or hike in Yuraygir National Park.
