Perched on the edge of the Jamison Valley, Echo Point Lookout offers the most famous and breathtaking view of the Three Sisters – a trio of sandstone peaks that are the emblem of the Blue Mountains. The lookout is a short, easy walk from the town of Katoomba, and on a clear day you can see the iconic rock formation jutting out over the eucalyptus-clad valley. It's a must-visit for any traveller exploring the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.
Highlights & What to See
- The Three Sisters – The main attraction: three distinct pillars formed by erosion, with the Aboriginal legend of Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo adding a layer of cultural significance. The best photos are taken at sunrise or sunset when the rocks glow orange.
- Giant Stairway – A steep, 900-step walkway that descends from the lookout down into the valley, passing the Three Sisters up close. It's a challenging but rewarding hike for fit travellers.
- Echo Point Visitor Centre – A modern centre with interactive displays about the area's geology, Aboriginal heritage and wildlife. Pick up maps and tips from the friendly staff.
- Scenic World – Just a 10-minute walk away, this attraction offers the Scenic Railway (the steepest passenger railway in the world), a cableway and a skyway for panoramic views of the valley and the Three Sisters from different angles.
- Katoomba Cascades – A short walk from Echo Point leads to these pretty waterfalls, especially impressive after rain. The trail is lined with ferns and mossy boulders.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30 minutes to an hour at the lookout itself, taking photos and soaking in the view. If you plan to tackle the Giant Stairway or visit Scenic World, allocate at least half a day. A full day is ideal if you want to combine the lookout with a walk to Katoomba Cascades and a ride on the Scenic Railway. Arrive early (before 10am) or late afternoon to avoid the crowds and capture the best light.
