Wentworth Falls is a serene village perched on the edge of the Blue Mountains escarpment, offering some of the most dramatic and accessible lookouts in the region. The namesake waterfall plunges 187 metres into the Jamison Valley, and the surrounding network of walking trails leads you through ancient rainforest, past sandstone cliffs, and to sweeping views that will leave you breathless. This is a place for hikers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape from city life — with a cosy café scene and a strong sense of local heritage.
Highlights & What to See
- Wentworth Falls Lookout & Waterfall – The main attraction: a powerful cascade best viewed from the lookout just a short walk from the car park. For a closer encounter, take the Wentworth Pass loop to the base of the falls.
- Charles Darwin Walk – An easy 1.5 km track along the edge of the escarpment, named after the naturalist who visited in 1836. It leads to the top of the falls and offers superb valley views.
- Valley of the Waters – A stunning chain of cascades and pools accessible via the Grand Stairway. The walk weaves through lush ferns and past several smaller waterfalls before reaching the Empress Lookout.
- National Pass – One of the Blue Mountains’ classic bushwalks, this 4.5 km loop combines the Grand Stairway, Wentworth Falls, and the Valley of the Waters. Allow 3–4 hours for the full circuit.
- Conservation Hut – A historic stone building at the start of many walks, now a café with a deck overlooking the valley. Perfect for a post-hike coffee and scone.
- Wentworth Falls Lake – A peaceful picnic spot with a walking track around the water, ideal for families and birdwatching.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can easily spend a full day here, especially if you plan to tackle one of the longer walks like the National Pass. For a more relaxed visit, a half-day is enough to see the main lookout, stroll the Charles Darwin Walk, and enjoy lunch at the Conservation Hut. If you’re short on time, the lookout and waterfall loop can be done in under two hours. Early morning or late afternoon light is best for photography, and weekdays are quieter.
